well, it's about time that WHO declared pandemic status to swine flu... but why bother? everyone has already reached that conclusion.

and frankly, it seems like no one really gives a damn anymore. after the initial scare, the media has (successfully) instilled into the public the mentality that swine flu is not very deadly, and that (almost) everything is under control. well the public caught on to this, and now they're busy not caring about its spread. or so it seems.

of course, control measures are in place, but are they effective, and are they in proper use? installing thermal scanners in the airport seems to be particularly useless.. look how many has slipped through this "safety measure". and if no one bothers about taking precautions anymore, is there even a point?

the whole mentality of this pandemic is seriously different from the last time something like this happened... sars. sars well, really made people panic and go all crazy with protective measures. but swine flu? not even close. maybe it's cos i'm in a different city (which doesn't really give a damn about anything, even elections), but judging from friends' responses, even usually kiasu n paranoid people in sg don't give a damn..

ah well, just let it spread around la. hopefully it'll only be rather infectious, and not highly pathogenic. then all will be happy. lalala.

question spotting now.. or more like question-type spotting... judging from past years' papers, the questions come from a range of lecturers, that doesn't change at all. so, if there are two questions set in a certain section, i can choose to study everything one lecturer taught and foresake the other lecturer's stuff. sounds good in theory. but if things suddenly change, i'm so screwed.

revise until so stoned... that i'd rather sort out my music collection. the unsorted songs that i haven't added - which is in a huge mess -_-'''

ah well, at least i'm doing something remotely constructive.

sometimes i think that the discussion board on blackboard (my online portal for all my coursework) is greatly abused. someone posted this question:

"In the structure of FAD on slide 18 between FMN and AMP is there supposed to be a phosphodiester bond, like in NAD, or are the two phosphorous atoms supposed to be directly linked?"

2 things come to mind immediately.

1: isn't it easier to go wiki it up? it takes much fewer characters to type and you get a response so much sooner. it's not like someone purposely went to create a whole fake page to fake out everyone... trusting something like wiki is probably safer than the lecture slides, which are usually fraught with errors due to typos or unupdated stuff...

2: were u tryin to memorize the structure of every single molecule that exists in the cell? if u are, good luck. now i know why u think that the course is so impossibly tough. it's really tough of people lacking common sense. well, i bet someone's gonna try to memorize the primary structure of RNA polymerase or some other ridiculously complicated thing in the hopes that they'll get marks for "outside reading"... common sense is rare these days...

and i'm short on sanity these days.

when you begin to dream about RNA polymerase....

you know you're traumatized by your essay.
